  • Generally, there are two types of visits.

The first visit type includes an MRI scan and a short out-of-scanner task that is most often completed using paper/pencil but might include using a digital tablet/stylus and at times an eye-tracker to record eye gaze.

The second visit type is the same as the first, but doesn’t include an MRI scan.

  • A typical visit is anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. We’ll be sure you are aware of the time commitment when we schedule your visits.

  • Yes! Parking is available at 18th and Horton Avenue on the Peabody Campus of Vanderbilt University. Click here for a Google Maps pin drop to use in GPS. A research assistant will meet you there at your appointment time to escort you to the lab.

  • Yes! We always provide free child care during your visit. We may ask if you plan to bring other children because knowing this information can help us plan.

  • Yes! Compensation varies from study to study. We’ll be sure you are aware of the time commitment when we schedule your visits.

  • MRI is a way to see inside the body. Functional MRI (fMRI) allows us to see how the brain functions, and anatomical MRI allows us to see what the brain looks like.

And, yes! MRI is safe and used routinely in clinical an research settings. See our “What is functional and anatomical MRI?” for more information on this.
